College football – we love it. But it sure does make scheduling events in October difficult!
Case in point: we’ve had to re-work one of our favorite days of service, Make a Difference Day (MDDAY). This is a huge national day of service sponsored by USA Weekend which draws thousands of volunteers out into their local communities to serve one another. For the past several years, ARM has joined in the fun by hosting a local MDDAY event in the Lee/Macon county area. This has always been a great day for local churches, volunteer groups, and individuals to join us for a day of service through home repair, relational ministry, and community projects.
The official MDDAY is coming up on October 25th, but, unfortunately, the national organizers of this event didn’t consider the football schedules for Auburn and Tuskegee Universities when they chose this date! In light of these schedules, we’ve had to change plans for our local MDDAY event.
Instead of MDDAY, we’d like to invite you, your church, or your volunteer group to serve with us on Be a Saint Saturday (BASS)! It’s happening on Saturday, November 1st, which we all know as… All Saints Day!. What better way to remember and honor the champions of our faith than through a day of service? I think it’s appropriate to end this post with a quote from one of the most beloved saints in the Christian tradition, Saint Francis of Assisi:
Remember that when you leave this earth you can taken nothing of what you have received, but only what you have a given: a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice, and courage.
