The Committee of 19, a group of ambitious college students at Auburn, is sponsoring the 3rd Annual Hunger March between April 1st and 3rd. This year’s destination is Notasulga, where students will participate in a day of service and community forum on Saturday.
Ultimately, the Committee of 19 aims to establish a long-term relationship with Notasulga. We hope to identify and partner with groups that are already established and aware of the community needs – churches, schools, food pantries, civic groups, etc. Our goal is to serve firsthand with the citizens of Notasulga. Through the community forums, we hope to identify specific needs in Notasulga and brainstorm on how our group could help. We want to make it abundantly clear that this is much more than simply “completing projects.” We aim to work with, not for, Notasulga.
The 26-mile walk to Notasulga and back will serve as a kickoff and generate awareness about this partnership. For the past two years, we have sponsored 60-mile walks to Montgomery. Most of all, we hope to establish a dialogue among citizens, community leaders, and ourselves about the needs of Notasulga. We aim to see how college students could develop long-lasting partnerships with local groups to make an impact on the community.
