No More Shacks Day 5: November 4, 2024

Total $60,398 www.arm-al.org/give

We start day five at the shack and our final day. Last night was my final night and it finally began to feel like fall. A wind made the fire not so pleasant as smoke from every direction stung our eyes. The warmth and ambience were wonderful but they came with a price. However, we must keep the fire burning!

Sunday afternoon became a wheelchair ramp building clinic! What fun. The shack visitors included some friends from the National Guard. Pretty awesome to have two retired Colonel’s from the Alabama National Guard joining the effort! They built five frames which can build at least one ramp. An Auburn University student also joined us in the effort!

There are many times when ARM gets a call because an elderly person fell, has developed arthritis, or has some other medical condition making walking and mobility difficult and painful. Without a ramp, a person could easily be trapped in their home in a fire or evacuation order for a storm. Having these frames gives us flexibility when a ramp is needed and make it significantly easier for volunteers to put in place.

Faces of Restoration focus: The Phillips family are a delight to serve. Residing in Tuskegee, they have had to wrestle with many repair issues. Mr. Phillips is a retired Navy veteran and so we feel especially honored to serve him. It is a way of saying thanks for his service to our nation. His family is the center of their neighborhood loading children up every Sunday morning to haul them to church. Their children and grandchildren have attended SonShine Kids Day Camp for several years.

They live in a wonderful little neighborhood and deep community. However, their roof and the life of the shingles had exceeded their lifespan and their roof was leaking. A water leak under the home was making the foundation moist and driving up their water bill. After inspecting the septic system, we discovered a major clog and a service came and cleared the lines. Finally, a tree leaning on the home was removed and helped with their homeowner’s insurance. The final repair for the Phillips family is installing new windows for broken ones or for where the seals are compromised and leaking air. We love them and look forward to having their home fully restored!

So far you have raised $60,398 towards $100,000 and a new total is coming later this evening. That means six homes are sponsored! Just four more to go! Let’s see what God will do today this final day! $40,000 is a lot of ground to make up but can be done! We just have to keep the fire of the Holy Spirit burning for our neighbors’ (and our) restoration!

If you are local, come out and bring your children to paint on the shack! We’ll share about the ministry, why we are living here, and why and how we are called to serve.
