Late summer does not usually bring to mind growth and newness. But if you are in Lee County, Alabama, there is evidence of renewal, restoration, and resilience throughout our community. Six months ago, tornadoes ripped our landscape causing devastation to life and property. It gashed our small, tight, rural towns. We were left reeling; hurt, confused and broken.

Six months later, new growth is apparent. Neighbors near and far have rallied together to help pick up debris and help families make repairs. Survivors are slowly rebuilding their homes and lives. It is a beautiful story being written with new chapters developed for so many. Every survivor is a hero in my book and we are honored to listen to their stories and journey with them in their recovery. My sense of wholeness and recovery is linked to theirs.

What excites me is how many more people are still coming to serve. The communities of Beauregard and Smiths Station continue developing and coordinating their own events and lean on each other daily. The resiliency of one person is the resiliency of the community. Churches and the body of Christ have been a source of glue holding all things together and love is abounding. I recall the words of one survivor who lifted up her small church as the source of her family’s strength and recovery.

Scars are reminders of the pain we have endured. Although there may be deep scars left, we are stronger and more committed to loving our neighbor and being there for them. Jesus’ body also bears scars and reminds us of what love is willing to take on. I pray we continue looking for signs of rebuilding, renewal, and resilience as we recover and rebound together!

Love you all!

Lisa
